Lamastone does not purchase under any circumstances conflict diamonds. We only purchase diamonds which have been approved in the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. What are conflict diamonds?
Conflict diamonds are illegally purchased diamonds. The term was created when rebels in Africa used diamonds to finance their resistance against legitimate governments. In the period when the problem was most serious, it was estimated that about four percent of all diamonds on the market were conflict diamonds. In 2000, the Kimberley Process was introduced and today the estimated number is less than one percent. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme follows the diamonds from the mine to the market. Lamastone only purchases from the biggest and most renowned diamond suppliers. They actively support, as we do, the Kimberley Process to prevent the illegal diamond trade. |
Today there are 71 countries cooperating for the non-conflict diamond trade. These countries represent about 99% of the diamond trade. Those which accept the Kimberley Process are only allowed to trade with each other and not with non-members.
